Wish Meeting June 28, 2022

Present:

Jared Perkins, Roy Adams, Manny, Michael, Tom, Toni

Summer Events (there are fewer students than normal on campus)

Other Events – Churches – It would be great for partner churches to plan events for students throughout the year.  If your church would like to plan an event, please get the information to Toni before July 8.  This applies to any event between August 22 – December 31.  EXAMPLES:

  • Plum Creek will do a Thanksgiving Day Meal for International Students
  • First Church Burlington is considering a Welcome Night at a member’s home for 20 students
  • Pumpkin Patch event in October
  • First Church Campbell County considering a “Day at the Park” at Smale Park
  • We definitely would like to see some churches host some Christmas Break events (Ice Skating, Lights at Creation Museum, Movie Night, etc)

Collections

3 Items in welcome box.  Sheets, Pillows, Towel (NOT IN A BOX)

Plum Creek and First Church are collecting these items.  We need other churches to help with this collection.  Manny and Jared will communicate about how to get them packed and ready for August Pick up.  They will be stored at Callahan (Toni).  We need 175.  No additional items.

                Food/Hygiene –

Plum Creek is working on the food/hygiene items.  These will be collected and packed by Plum Creek and in different bags.  Plum Creek will get these items to Callahan before August 12

Airport Pick-ups

                August 13-16

Hoping to get vans to run every 2 hours.  Table set up to welcome students at the airport.  Running a shuttle to NKU.  Need volunteers to welcome,  Vans needed, Volunteers to drive,

200 students (4 year)

32 exchange students – individual pickups

Picnic and Jungle Jim’s (August 21-28?).  Need volunteers

Ok.  We need mass volunteers for this!  We are looking to fill 3 volunteer spots for 12 hours per day on August 12-17.  These 3 volunteers will stay inside the airport to welcome students as the arrive.  Students will then be taken by shuttle back to NKU.  We DO still need to borrow some vans (If your church has a van we could use, let us know).

Jared will work on getting a volunteer spreadsheet together so we can start recruiting from our churches.

We will also be putting together an “orientation” sheet so the volunteers know exactly what needs to be done.

THEN… on Sunday August 21, we need ALL HANDS ON DECK to help with the picnic and ESPECIALLY transportation to Jungle Jims (again, church vans can help, but personal cars, too).  We also need these volunteer drivers to host students at Jungle Jims.  We could potentially have 150 students at this event.  We may need 40 or more families to volunteer!

International Friendship Families

Only for exchange students (they are only here for less than a year)

These students need more conversational help

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY – We need to host 10 students from Japan during the Labor Day Weekend.  Friday – Monday.  Contact Toni if you have some families that could host a student for that weekend.

Fall Trip

                Drivers (Chaperones) Needed, Van, Food

                October 16-18

Contact Toni if you are interested in a trip to Gatlinburg with the international students.  We have a few chaperone spots available and could use a few drivers (AGAIN… Church vans would be great)

Next Meeting

                August 22

No Meeting in July.  We have LOTS TO DO to get ready for student pick up.  If you would like to volunteer to help with any of the above items, contact the appropriate person.  Or just get in touch with Jared.
